Every dog has his day, and his... #numb

私が大学生だったころの話。

履修していた美学の授業で期末レポート課題が出た。そのテーマは「キッチュは悪か？」というもの。

授業の参考書は、ポストモダン的な発想の芸術作品に美点を認めるものだったが、授業を担当する老教授はそれと異なる立場にあり、同書をときおり痛烈に批判した。そんな授業は私にとってなかなかエキサイティングで、私は大勢の学生が爆睡するなか、教授のもとで美学を専攻する友人と二人、最前列で目を輝かせて聞いていた。

私は二つの立場の間で葛藤した挙句、どちらともつかない立場のレポートを提出したが、それによって、同様の質問は授業のあとも私を悩ませることとなった。

作曲家の私は、作曲を通じてこのテーマに向き合うことにした。

村上春樹の『風の歌を聴け』のあるパートには、俗物を象徴するラジオパーソナリティが登場する。主人公をして「犬の漫才師」と称された彼には、物語を締めくくる重要な役割を与えられるわけだが、私はその曖昧な存在に触発され、犬にまつわるクラシック音楽作品を複数コラージュしながらも(文字通り、キッチュ)、単なるパロディやキッチュにとどまらない文脈の音楽を目指した。

ところで、同作は2019年、死に際の我が家の犬に捧げる目的で作曲されたが、犬は2021年6月現在、存命である。

This is a story from when I was a university student.

I had a report assignment in my philosophy class. The theme was "Is Kitsch Evil?

The reference books for the class generally evaluated postmodern aesthetic thought, but the old professor in charge of the class was in

the position of reevaluating modernity, and he sometimes criticized the books bitterly. Such classes were quite exciting.

After struggling between the two positions, I submitted a report that could not decide between the two, but even after the class was over,

the same questions occasionally bothered me.

As a composer, I decided to confront this issue through composition.

In Haruki Murakami's "Listen to the Wind Sing," there is a radio personality who symbolizes vulgarity.

He is regarded as a "dog comedian" by the protagonist, but he is given an important role to play in concluding the story.

I was impressed by this role, and while collaging several classical music works related to dogs (literally, kitsch), I aimed to create music

with a narrative that goes beyond mere parody.

This work was composed in 2019 for the purpose of dedicating it to a dying dog, but the dog is still alive as of June 2021.

Note: The dog died in the winter of 2021.
